Doom and gloom about AI
This doom and gloom about AI destroying humanity is overblown out of proportion. The alarmists are screeching about apocalyptic scenarios and how the world will end, gathering whatever limelight they can get to themselves.
It's a tad dramatic, made up of people who are very good researchers but nowhere with the credibility to be given such big platforms. Of course we cannot discount the possibility that they might be true and there is a robot uprising on the horizon but I'm sure there were people in the streets protesting about steam engines, trains and cars when they first appeared. The alarm bells were rang just the way they are now, albeit on a larger scale.
The more realistic options are two: one is that internal models have done or are doing things that the companies cannot control or fully shut off and they are coordinating an effort to slow down research. Or two which is that Chinese and other open source models keep outpacing them and releasing them to the world, destroying their ability to make money. A moratorium on AI research locks in the status quo and helps these American companies stay in the lead.
The second option is more likely, given the stakes at play.
