AI is cool, AI is productive, Bangladesh hires a lot of external consultants and spends a lot of money, we can use AI to plug this gap and develop our own inhouse expertise AI generative tools have completely changed the way we do work. In a short span of a few months, generative AI tools have become indispensable to millions of early adopters. Since its launch in November, 2022, ChatGPT has cemented its place as the best AI chatbot. It is a veritable Swiss army knife capable of doing many things well: writing, reading, coding, solving math problems and analyzing complicated problems. It is simple to use, easy to understand and incredibly deep in its knowledge. For an emerging economy like Bangladesh, it is imperative it utilizes this new technology to leverage the maximum benefits. We already suffer from a dearth of qualified workers, leading us to hire extremely expensive consultants and experts from foreign countries. We outsource the inner workings of our local industries to foreigners, ignoring the local expertise we have in the market. For all it’s strengths it is still a tool which is only as good as its user. As powerful as a Formula 1 car is, if I got behind the wheel I’d have a long way to go before I got close to Lewis Hamilton’s level. Similarly, if we want to get the most of out of ChatGPT, we need to know how to effectively use it. There are some quick and easy tricks to use with it: 1. Understand the Purpose: Clearly define what you want to achieve with the prompt. 2. Be Specific and Concise: Use precise language to avoid ambiguity. 3. Provide Context & Background Information: Give the AI enough context to understand the task. In brief, we need to be sure of what we want to achieve, give the instructions clearly and concisely and finally, provide any additional information the GPT will need. For example, If I needed something very specific, like a comparison of the economy of Bangladesh and Vietnam in 1980, I would have to specifically ask for that: ‘Compare the economy of Bangladesh and Vietnam in 1980. focus on GDP and GDP per capita and other metrics of human development’. A generic statement asking the GPT to compare the economies of Bangladesh and Vietnam would have it focusing on the current economic state, which is not what we needed. Additionally, the more times you ‘replay’ the prompt with changes or tweaks, you will find the answers get different. Through trial and error, you can find the answers you are looking for. If you give up with the first or second prompt, it will be useless. Finally, for the purpose of this post, ChatGPT is really great at editing and polishing written documents. If I had a sample essay that I had written in a rush and needed proof reading, the AI will give me a polished version that caters to my specifications. If I wanted an informal essay, it would tailor it for that instead of an essay geared towards academics or government officials. Thus, ChatGPT and similar models are extremely popular and powerful tools which add a lot of value to an user’s work. They multiply someone’s effectiveness and add to their capabilities. All they need to do is be willing to experiment and ‘play’ with the model to get what they want.
